A friend has been struggling with a problem with his MacBook Air (Haswell) and the freshly released Mavericks. Suddenly he looses sound and the only way to get it back seemed to be a complete restart.
As you can imagine this was very annoying so I will share the steps he found in the Apple Discussions forums that allowed him to find a definitive solution:
You first have to search and delete these files:
/Library/Preferences/com.
~/Library/Preferences/com.
/Library/Preferences/Audio/
/Library/Preferences/Audio/
(they will be re-created).
and then:
- Shut down your Mac.
- Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
- Turn on the computer.
- Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
- Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
- Release the keys.
