mac-no-sound-iconA friend has been struggling with a problem with his MacBook Air (Haswell) and the freshly released Mavericks. Suddenly he looses sound and the only way to get it back seemed to be a complete restart.

As you can imagine this was very annoying so I will share the steps he found in the Apple Discussions forums that allowed him to find a definitive solution:

You first have to search and delete these files:

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.soundpref.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.soundpref.plist
/Library/Preferences/Audio/com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist
/Library/Preferences/Audio/com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist

(they will be re-created).

and then:

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  6. Release the keys.

Let us know if this worked for you too!
